Description

“Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'” - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was a vital figure of the modern era and pivotal in the fight for civil rights. He was an instrumental leader in the Montgomery Bus Boycott, made famous by the nonviolent resistance and arrest of Rosa Parks. Over the course of his time in the civil rights movement, he was arrested 30 times but never lost sight of his goal to maintain peaceful protests. His words about justice, empowerment, love and peace are famous around the world.

The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.” This year, RSVP is teaming up with AmeriCorps and Foster Grandparents to send volunteers into Lincoln Elementary as part of a national Read for Peace program. Students will learn the impact of Dr. King’s work and life on American history through stories and activities.

Volunteers will be provided with the materials for the program and only need to bring a positive attitude. There are two time slots that we need volunteers, so please check your calendar and join us in celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on January 13th. If you can volunteer, please call Jessica or Lynette at 727-3400 or email jbriggs@uwccmt.org.

Time Slot 1: 8:45-10 a.m. with kindergarten to second grade students.

Time Slot 2:  2-3:15 p.m. with third to sixth grade students.
