Who We Are

Mission: To provide for the stewardship of the fish, wildlife, parks, and recreational resources of Montana, while contributing to the quality of life for present and future generations.

The Region 4 Parks Division oversees the management and operation of five State Parks—Ackley Lake, First Peoples Buffalo Jump, Giant Springs/Heritage (including Sulphur Springs), Sluice Boxes, and Tower Rock—along with the Smith River Float Program and Missouri Corridor Recreation Program. Covering 12.5 counties in north-central Montana, Region 4 spans over 19.5 million acres, representing 20.8% of the state. With its rich ecological diversity and historical significance, the region serves as a hub for outdoor recreation, conservation, and wildlife management.

What We Do

Region 4 Parks Division provides recreational access, conservation stewardship, and wildlife management across a vast landscape. We maintain 63 Fishing Access Sites, manage two major recreation corridors (Smith and Missouri Rivers), and operate eight Wildlife Management Areas totaling over 94,000 acres. The region is home to diverse flora and fauna, including populations of all ten common big game species in Montana. Through initiatives like Block Management, conservation easements, and partnerships with federal and state agencies, we promote sustainable outdoor activities while preserving the natural and cultural heritage of this unique area.
