As part of Get Fit Great Falls’ Building Active Communities Initiative, we are recruiting volunteers to help conduct walkability studies in 10 city parks. This is a fairly limited time commitment, but we’re looking to recruit 40 volunteers total who are a mix of able bodied and people with various kinds of disabilities. Together teams of four people will walk city parks, share comments and rate the parks systematically section-by-section.
On Friday, April 13, from 2-4 p.m. at the Gibson Park band shell, and Saturday, April 14, from 10 a.m. to noon at North Kiwanis Park, there will be training on what to watch for, how to measure and complete the studies. You will also be partnered with your four-person teams. Together, each team will decide a time that best works for them to complete a park survey in the following two weeks.
We are timing this event to lead up to the park district vote on May 8, with the hope of getting media attention around a true need in our community – making our parks accessible not just to people in wheelchairs, but to parents pushing strollers, grandparents with walkers and anyone with mobility issues.
Contact Kim Skornogoski at kskornogoski@uwccmt.org if you'd like to help out! This will be a very rewarding and eye-opening volunteer experience. Thanks!
