Special Olympics is lighting up Great Falls for its first ever moonlight cycling fundraiser.

Pedal for the Medal is a noncompetitive 10K cycling event that will take place on the River’s Edge Trail under a full moon on Aug. 9. The course takes riders along the Missouri River through West Bank Park, Elk’s Riverside Park and under the historic 10th Street Bridge.

The event is most in need of bike riders willing to fundraise to help disabled individuals discover their abilities through sports and competition. Riders are asked to raise $100 in pledges, though riders younger than 17 can raise $50.

Participants are offered various prizes based on their pledge totals.

Teams and families are encouraged to participate. There will be awards for individuals and teams raising the most in pledges, the best costume, the best decorated bike and many more. Riders are encouraged to dress in bright-neon colors or wear bright pajamas and decorate their bikes.

Other volunteers are needed to help with registration, merchandise sales, staff rest stops, guide bikers through the route and take photos.
